| Founded
in 1994 and based in Miami, Florida, the Caribbean Bar Association
(“CBA”) is a South Florida voluntary bar organization
that has grown from 25 to over 150 attorneys from the Caribbean-American
community in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. The CBA
includes attorneys working both in the public and private sector and
practicing in several areas of the law, including but not limited
to criminal and commercial litigation, administrative, family, immigration,
business and corporate, insurance defense, medical malpractice, real
estate, maritime, international, personal injury, land use/zoning
law, among others.
Since its inception, the CBA has implemented numerous
activities and partnerships around the following mission and objectives:
- To articulate and promote the goals and objectives of Caribbean-American
lawyers in South Florida.
- To foster and encourage professional excellence among Caribbean-American
lawyers.
- To promote a greater awareness of and commitment to the civil
and political rights of the Caribbean-American community.
- To develop relationships with other Caribbean-American professionals
and organizations.
- To increase the enrollment of Caribbean law students.
- To promote the general welfare of Caribbean citizens in South
Florida (English, French/Creole, Spanish & Dutch speaking).
In the year 2000, the CBA adopted the promotional tagline of “Informing,
Educating, Empowering”, that captured its proactive mission
to provide and foster more information, education, and empowerment
for and on behalf of the needs of the Caribbean-American community
in South Florida. To this end, the CBA has embarked on the following
initiatives:
- Developed a partnership with the local print, radio and TV Caribbean
media.
- Fostered a communicative partnership with the local Caribbean
Consular Corps.
- Participated in numerous local, statewide and international
town hall meetings sponsored by Caribbean-American corporations
in providing free legal and civic advice to the public
- Established a Scholarship Fund through its Annual Banquet in
support of the Florida Caribbean Students Association
- Acknowledged and honored outstanding Caribbean-American citizens
for their charitable and/or community work
- Made public appearances on local radio in addressing specific
issues affecting Caribbean-American citizens.
- Produced a Membership Directory that also included information
on other local voluntary bars, media, Consulates, and other professional
organizations
- Conducted various citizenship and voter’s registration
drives.
In order to achieve some of these goals and initiatives, the CBA
has collaborated and partnered with corporations and organizations
such as, Air Jamaica, Bank United, Western Union, WVCG 1080AM, Caribbean
Today Newsmagazine, Picture Tek, Friends of the Good Shepherd, and
Holy Family Episcopal Church.
The CBA is a voluntary bar that not only makes a local impact, but
is also called upon for statewide, national, and international response.
With its local knowledge and focus, the CBA has the ability to bridge
the gap in the awareness of Caribbean-American issues and to nurture
relationships with neighboring countries and sister bars in the
Caribbean Basin. As the Caribbean-American population continues
to increase in large numbers in South Florida and in other large
Florida cities, the CBA will find a greater purpose for its existence,
vision and voluntary bar goals.
This year, the Legal Aid Society of the Dade County Bar Association
and its Put Something Back Program selected the CBA as the Voluntary
Bar Association of the Year. This award will be presented at the
annual Put Something Back awards luncheon on Wednesday, May 21,
2003.
